A Procedure for the Automated Detection of Magnetic Field Inversion in SOHO MDI Magnetograms

چکیده
Magnetic inversion lines are generally constructed from line-of-sight magnetic field data which have been smoothed to reduce the resolution scale of the data. This eliminates the fine details of the magnetic inversion lines found in regions of strong magnetic field. The paper presents a new approach to constructing magnetic neutral lines, based on a distance transform, which aims to construct neutral lines retaining fine detail in regions of strong magnetic field while reducing the detail elsewhere. The method of implementation is described and results obtained are compared with those obtained by applying Gaussian smoothing to solar magnetograms and with filaments visible in an Hα image for 2002 July.

Comparison of Line-of-Sight Magnetograms Taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory/Michelson Doppler Imager
We compare line-of-sight magnetograms from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The line-of-sight magnetic signal inferred from the calibrated MDI data is greater than that derived from the HMI data by a factor of 1.40. This factor varies somewhat with...

We investigate p-mode absorption in a sunspot using SOHO/MDI high-resolution Doppler images. The Doppler power computed from a three and a half hour data set is used for studying the absorption in a sunspot. The result shows an enhancement in absorption near the umbral-penumbral boundary of the sunspot. We attempt to relate the observed absorption with the magnetic field structure of the sunspo...
متن کاملThe Magnetic Association of Coronal Bright Points
Several coronal bright points identified in a quiet region of the Sun from SOHO/EIT Fe XII images are found to have a time evolution from birth to decay which is extremely well correlated with the rise and fall of magnetic flux as determined from photospheric magnetograms made with the SOHO/MDI instrument. Radiative losses of the bright points are found to be much less than conductive losses bu...
متن کاملSolar Magnetic Field Studies Using the 12 - Micron Emission Lines . IV . Observations of a Delta - Region Solar
We have recently developed the capability to make solar vector (Stokes IQUV) magnetograms using the infrared line of MgI at 12.32 μm. On 24 April 2001, we obtained a vector magnetic map of solar active region NOAA 9433, fortuitously just prior to the occurrence of an M2 flare. Examination of a sequence of SOHO/MDI magnetograms, and comparison with ground-based H-alpha images, shows that the fla...

We estimated photospheric velocities by separately applying the Fourier Local Correlation Tracking (FLCT) and Differential Affine Velocity Estimator (DAVE) methods to 2708 co-registered pairs of SOHO/MDI magnetograms, with nominal 96-minute cadence and ∼ 2 pixels, from 46 active regions (ARs) from 1996-1998 over the time interval τ45 when each AR was within 45 of disk center. For each magnetogr...
